ARTICHOKE is the Agency cryptonym for the study and/or use of ‘special’ interrogation methods that have been known to include the use of drugs and chemicals, hypnosis, and ‘total isolation,’ a form of psychological harassment.
This declassified government plan was approved by the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1962, and outlined several terrorist operations that the Pentagon planned to launch against America, while blaming a foreign country.

The Bybee Memo, co-authored by John Yoo, also known as the Torture Memo and the 8/1/02 Interrogation Opinion, was a document prepared by the United States Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) in response to a CIA request to the White House. Following this memo, a new definition of torture was issued. Most actions that fall under the international definition do not fall within this new definition advocated by the U.S.
Yoo also authored the October 23, 2001 memo asserting that the President had sufficient power to allow the NSA to monitor the communications of US citizens on US soil without a warrant because the fourth amendment does not apply. Or, as another memo says in one of its footnotes, “Our office recently concluded that the Fourth Amendment had no application to domestic military operations.”
After pressure from the September 11th Commission, the White House declassified the Presidential Daily Briefing (PDB) from August 6th 2001 which had a two page section titled “Bin Ladin [sic] Determined to Strike in US.” The memo outlined multiple indications showing Bin Ladin’s network was planning hijackings and other attacks against America and may have had a cell working in New York recruiting for attacks. Bush and others claimed the attacks were a complete surprise.
