10 Things You "Need" To Know Today

10/30/2014

Propaganda

Propaganda is a form of communication aimed towards influencing the attitude of a population toward some cause or position.

Propaganda is information that is not impartial and used primarily to influence an audience and further an agenda, often by presenting facts selectively (thus possibly lying by omission) to encourage a particular synthesis, or using loaded messages to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. Propaganda can be used as a form of ideological or commercial warfare.

Maybe it's a psychological condition I have, but I don't know why I keep finding stuff to add to this website.

I came across this IFTTT recipe which offered to email a daily digest of "10 Things You Need To Know Today", by THEWEEK.com. I activated the recipe, and when I got my first daily digest, I thought this might be a interesting way of keeping track of top stories we're supposed to find important.

Like this for example:

Giants win their third World Series in five years

The San Francisco Giants beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 in a hard-fought Game 7 to win the World Series on Wednesday night. The Giants were the first team to win their third Major League Baseball championship in five years since the New York Yankees did it in the late 1990s. Giants ace and Series MVP Madison Bumgarner, who had already earned two wins in the Series, pitched the last five innings and held onto the team's narrow lead by allowing just two hits, getting the final out with the tying run on third. [San Jose Mercury News]

A World Series fit for the history books. Yeah, exactly. If you have read Brian Tuohy's The Fix Is In, you'd be pretty skeptical of this year's MLB series. The Kansas City Royals, with their lackluster history, return to respectability in 2013, and have an amazing season in 2014. To top it off, there's the wonderful story of the Korean "Superfan", whose appearance in Kansas City coincides with an amazing eight game winning streak. Wow, the Royals now have a chance for the series title!

Then during the Worlds Series it was back and forth. First they lost, then they won, then they came out ahead, then they lost, and the Giants won again. It looks like the Giants are going to take home the title in game six, but the Royals won again, 10-0! 10-0, really? I mean the Giants had made at least one run in all the other games. Zero? I guess they were just too tired from their last win. Anyway, it's all down to game seven, and despite a late triple play, the Royals lost 3-2 to the Giants. But you know what, that's okay, you guys made an amazing comeback, and I'm pretty excited for the Giants too; they've won their third series title in five years. That's definitely something to be proud of. I'll bet both teams are going to be greeted by their home city's as "hero's".

Okay, so maybe that's a soapbox of mine. Sorry to rant a bit. But the point still remains, what are we supposed to care about today? Well, I guess we'll see.
