Porn and The Patrol Car: One Cop’s 2 Hour-A-Day Habit

3/10/2015

Pornography, though prevalent in the modern world, still isn't the sort of thing one expects to see while waiting in traffic behind a cop car. That's especially true at the busiest downtown intersection of a wealthy Chicago suburb like Wheaton, Illinois, best known for being the home of an evangelical Christian college once attended by Billy Graham.

Torture Report Finally Released

12/9/2014

Washington, D.C., December 9, 2014 – The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence today released the executive summary of its long-awaited "Study of the CIA's Detention and Interrogation Program," describing in more than 500 pages a dysfunctional agency so unprepared to handle suspected terrorist detainees after 9/11, that the CIA bought into private contractors' proposals for torture, and then lied to Congress, President Bush, the Justice Department, the public, and to itself about the purported effectiveness of the program.

The Plane That Fell From the Sky

10/11/2014

The truth was, flying commercial could be boring work.

The old philosophy among pilots, starting in the days when the DC-3 was the biggest thing going, was that you didn't really get paid for all the times you flew without a hitch, but for the one time out of a thousand when everything went to hell and you still brought the airplane in. That was the test of skill, and the one reason for all the other paychecks.

The Androgynous World Order: Feminism, the LGBTI Movement, and the Abolition of Gender

10/6/2014

The 144th Congress of Correction, which was held between August 15 to August 20, 2014 in Salt Lake City, featured a workshop over the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) and its ramifications for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) populations in detention. The consensus of those presenting this workshop was that inmates of these particular orientations were at increased risk for sexual victimization. Never once during the course of this workshop was the possibility raised of LGBTI inmates actually perpetrating such victimization. This omission betrayed an implicit partiality for those who embrace unconventional sexual orientations. Perhaps this omission was, to some extent, attributable to the overall outlook of those who assembled the workshop. The chief speaker was Bernadette Brown, who, in addition to being a Senior Program Specialist for the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, is a self-avowed lesbian. During her presentation, Brown boldly declared, “Gender is a social construct” (Brown).

Don't Believe Everything You Read About Flu Deaths

1/24/2014

Flu results in "about 250,000 to 500,000 yearly deaths" worldwide, Wikipedia tells us. "The typical estimate is 36,000 [deaths] a year in the United States," reports NBC, citing the Centers for Disease Control. "Somewhere between 4,000 and 8,000 Canadians a year die of influenza and its related complications, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada," the Globe and Mail says, adding that "Those numbers are controversial because they are estimates."

The Edge of The Abyss: Exposing The NSA's All-Seeing Machine

11/12/2013

"I know the capability that is there to make tyranny total in America, and we must see to it that this agency and all agencies that possess this technology operate within the law and under proper supervision, so that we never cross over that abyss. That is the abyss from which there is no return."
Senator Frank Church on Meet The Press, 1975

The Next Agent Orange

10/28/2013

Why is our military making its soldiers sick?

To an unsuspecting eye, the Torres family home is indistinguishable from the other bungalows that line a flat, treeless stretch of road somewhere off US Route 77. Under an unforgiving Texas sun, the family’s golden retriever runs in circles around the parched lawn, pausing for breath in the shadow of an SUV parked out front. And inside, life appears perfectly normal. Framed photos of Rosie and Le Roy’s wedding and of their three teenaged children line the mantle. Tubs of peanut butter and jam sit open on a cluttered kitchen counter. The giggles of 16-year-old girls on summer vacation echo from down the hall.
