After a smooth launch from Florida's Cape Canaveral, Orion splashed down at 11:29AM Eastern time, west of Baja California, in the Pacific Ocean. Orion's two loops around Earth got as high as 3,600 miles— about 15 times higher than the International Space Station and the highest any spacecraft made for people has gone in decades.
To combat an unexpected, mutated version of influenza, the CDC has warned Americans to supplement their shots with anti-viral medicine.

A week after it was brought to a standstill by a hacker group that may or may not have hailed from North Korea, things are getting even worse for Sony Pictures. The hackers that crippled the company's computer systems have now released a vast hoard of Sony Pictures' private documents onto the internet. An analysis of more than 33,000 documents showed that they displayed passwords to internal computers, credit cards, and social media accounts, as well as the Social Security numbers of 47,000 current and former Sony Pictures workers. The National Security Agency has spied on hundreds of companies and groups around the world, including in countries allied with the US government, as part of an effort designed to allow agents to hack into any cellphone network, no matter where it's located, according to a report published Thursday.
I’ll tell you what I know about the Eric Garner case: it’s a horrible tragedy, and it’s got nothing to do with race but a lot to do with bad laws — specifically, the law that criminalizes the sale of untaxed individual cigarettes. I want to get into those two points, but first I suppose I’m expected to render a verdict on the grand jury’s opinion. On that end, I can say this for sure: I’m not sure.

Doreen Hendrickson, wife of Pete Hendrickson, author of Cracking the Code- The Fascinating Truth About Taxation In America has a court hearing set for December 10, 2014, 1:30 pm, 231 W. Lafayette, Detroit 48226, 2nd floor, Victoria Roberts presiding, for sentencing on a contempt of court charge. A widely held belief is that Tucson Arizona resident Jared L. Loughner was a severely-deranged individual whose descent into mental illness precipitated the January 8, 2011 Tucson shooting where 18 people were shot, six fatally. Yet to what degree does this dominant media frame diverge from the actual events and Loughner’s comportment and interpersonal relations preceding the massacre?
If you're working on making phone conversations more secure, there's a very good chance the NSA is keeping an eye on your inbox. A new report from The Intercept looks into the NSA's efforts to stay ahead of the encryption that carriers use to keep phone calls safe from eavesdropping. The NSA has consistently been able to beat that encryption, often finding ways to crack standards like 4G before they're even implemented, and this report offers the first clues as to how.
The planned first launch of NASA's new Orion MPCV spacecraft was scrubbed this morning after a string of delays kept the vehicle on the pad through the end of its 159-minute launch window. The mission, referred to as Orion EFT-1 (for "Exploration Flight Test 1"), would have sent the unmanned Orion spacecraft into an elliptical orbit with a 5,790 kilometer (about 3,600 miles) apogee, allowing it to reenter the atmosphere at very high speeds in excess of 32,000 km/h (about 20,000 miles per hour), simulating the type of reentry the spacecraft would experience when returning from a lunar mission.
